The rebirth of Hell’s Kitchen has bridged the gap between the once-industrial waterfront with the center of midtown. In the process, it formed a neighborhood with vibrant nightlife, shopping, outdoor activities, and more. Ninth Avenue is lined with restaurants serving a wide range of cuisines, and drinks can be found in classic dives, swanky lounges, and a host of clubs with live music. The great outdoors is also easily accessible with the Hudson Greenway along the riverfront connecting Battery Park in the South and Riverside Park to the north. The Hudson River, too, provides numerous recreational opportunities.
I’m On A Boat!
Despite the lack of cargo ships docking along the Hudson River, boats are still a big part of the neighborhood. Sightseeing boats from Circle Line depart from Pier 83, near 42nd Street, offering a variety of tours. There’s a regular selection of sightseeing around New York harbor and sunset cruises around the Statue of Liberty, but also specialty seasonal trips like Hudson Valley foliage tours or the annual New Year’s Eve Cruise. Many of the trips also offer snacks and drinks for purchase onboard. For a more practical boating experience, NY Waterway ferries provide commuter service to New Jersey from their terminal at 40th Street. Free shuttles link the ferries on crosstown routes along 57th, 49th, 42nd, and 34th Street.
Don’t Get Up The River Without A Paddle
The Manhattan Kayak Club offers the chance to explore the river on a kayak. The club has been operating on the Hudson River for almost three decades, and today has a staff of paid professionals to facilitate experiences and keep visitors safe regardless of skill level. The club offers guided tours for beginners, intermediates, and advanced boaters. For regular kayak users, the club has a membership program.
Keeping Your Feet On Solid Ground
There’s plenty to do in Hell’s Kitchen even if you want to stay on solid ground. The New York Road Runners, the nonprofit behind the NYC marathon, maintains the RunCenter on 57th Street. The organization offers runners training, information on shoes and gear, how to prevent injuries, and facilities like bathrooms, changing rooms, and water fountains. The center also serves as a pickup point for race numbers.
Exercise Without The Exercise
Few sports have caught on quite as quickly as pickleball. The low-intensity activity has spread from the retirement communities of south Florida to the playgrounds of New York City seemingly overnight. Demand has outgrown many venues around the city. Luckily, Hell’s Kitchen Pickleball Club now offers 7 indoor courts for year-round play. The social club has open play sessions, private court rentals, co-working spaces, a bar and lounge, and member events.
Three Strikes and You Probably Win
Port Authority Bus Terminal isn’t usually a place New Yorkers want to go, but only because Frames Bowling is the transport hub’s best kept secret. That’s right, there’s a full bowling alley located in the Port Authority Bus Terminal, with food, drinks, and plenty of fun. Besides bowling, Frames also has billiards, darts, ping pong, and karaoke. It’s not the first place you’d think to find a full selection of fun games, but it does make it easy for your cousin from New Jersey to head back home at the end of the night instead of crashing on your couch.
