Indoor Fitness in Montauk and Amagansett
Maybe long walks on the dunes are not giving you enough of an adrenaline boost. Or perhaps you have grown tired of paddle boarding in the ocean or canoeing in the bay. Or maybe every time you head out for some serious swimming, it rains. Whatever your reason, you can work out at a number of Amagansett and Montauk fitness studios offering everything from yoga to indoor cycling.
199 Main Street, Amagansett
Barry’s Bootcamp has built a cult following nationwide with its 50-minute high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts that combine running on a treadmill with strength training. The studios are lit in red so that, when combined with the high-octane soundtrack, the effect is as much nightclub as gym. In addition to the flagship full-body workout, the Amagansett studio offers sessions that focus exclusively on the upper body, the lower body, and the core.
Body Tech Health & Fitness – Amagansett – 249 Main Street, Amagansett
Body Tech @ The Montauk Playhouse – 240 Edgemere Street, Montauk
Founded in 1986, Body Tech claims to be the Hamptons’ oldest gym. The emphasis is less on classes than on working out solo or with a trainer, though some group workouts are available: Amagansett has Muscle Up Monday—strength-training interval sessions held outdoors—and Boxing Bootcamp; Montauk offers boxing and the cleverly named ReBootcamp. Both locations include cardio and strength-training machines, TRX equipment, weights, mats, and more.
83 South Elmwood Avenue, Montauk
With its snow-white sheer curtains fluttering around large windows, BYoga’s Montauk studio gives off a suitably relaxed vibe. Its signature class, BFire, is an open-level Vinyasa flow session held multiple times each day to accommodate busy schedules. Other classes include BodhiSculpt, which incorporates Pilates and dance moves as well as yoga, and BRestored, which emphasizes meditation as well as restorative movement.
Mandala Yoga Center for Healing Arts
10 Amagansett Square Drive, Amagansett
Whether you are a yoga novice or devotee, in peak condition or out of shape, you are likely to find a suitable class at Mandala Yoga Center. Among what are labeled “gentler” classes are Chair Yoga, for those who cannot easily get down on the floor or back up, and Reiki & Restore. More-challenging courses include Evening Sweat and Surfer Yoga, which is not only for surfers but does focus on weight-bearing poses that reinforce core strength. Classes for toddlers, older kids, and expectant mothers are available as well. Both Ashtanga, which follows a precise order of postures, and the more fluid Vinyasa are taught. In addition, the center offers massages, aromatherapy, and ayurvedic treatments.
649 Montauk Highway, Montauk
In addition to its three Manhattan studios, New York Pilates offers classes and private sessions in Montauk throughout the summer. Sculpt + Restore, the signature class, uses the reformer machine for a full-body workout. Specialty sessions, which also use the reformer, include the open-level, high-intensity Burnout cardio workout and classes that focus on abs, arms, and the posterior.
15 South Edgemere Street, Monauk
Biking the trails that crisscross Montauk and Amagansett is certainly good exercise, but it likely does not raise the heart rate and burn calories as vigorously as one of SoulCycle’s stationary-cycling classes. Each class is held in a candlelit room and choreographed to a thumping soundtrack—and perhaps best of all, you do not have to worry about the weather curtailing your ride.
716 Montauk Highway, Suite Three, Montauk
This year the buzzy Surf Lodge opened a fitness center—not on the hotel/hot spot’s premises but about a mile away, near the Plaza and what one might consider Montauk’s downtown. Classes include P.sculpt, an hourlong open-level session that uses a variety of equipment to strengthen and tone; Plyo Flow, which incorporates Vinyasa yoga and plyometric movements; and Torch’d, a robust combination of dance and body-resistance moves taught by its creator, Isaac Calpito, a former choreographer for Ariana Grande. The Sanctuary also sells eco-friendly fitness apparel and beauty and wellness products.
Yoga Lila Montauk
12 South Etna Avenue, Montauk
Like Mandala Yoga Center, Yoga Lila offers both Ashtanga and Vinyasa classes. Its Gentle Yoga sessions practice a third yoga style, Hatha, which is somewhat slower-paced. Other classes include Core Yoga, which homes in on the abdominal muscles, and Vin to Yin Yoga, which begins with Vinyasa and ends with Yin yoga, in which postures are held for as long as several minutes.
