The Eclectic Shopping Scene of Amagansett and Montauk

The Eclectic Shopping Scene of Amagansett and Montauk

The plethora of stores in Southampton, East Hampton, and Sag Harbor tend to overshadow the boutiques of Amagansett and Montauk. Nonetheless, there is plenty of shopping to be had toward the end of the South Fork. Below are a few favorite stores, selling everything from apparel by under-the-radar designers to handcrafted jewelry and decor to old-school vinyl albums.

Botanica Bazaar

14 Amagansett Square, Amagansett

Botanical Baazar

The two Amagansett residents who founded Botanica Bazaar test every one of the products themselves before agreeing to place them on the handsome blond wood shelves of their two boutiques (in addition to the Amagansett shop, they own a second in Pacific Palisades, CA). Each beauty and wellness product—from the bamboo toothbrush with charcoal-infused bristles to the coffee made with wild-harvested chaga mushrooms to the antioxidants-packed SPF 30 sunscreen—is made with mostly, if not exclusively, natural materials.

Ganeaux

167 Main Street, Amagansett

Ganeaux bills itself as a concept shop, and the concept is one of quiet, curated luxury. In the airy, minimalist store you can find simply cut, perfectly distressed jeans from 6397 for women and Purple for men, handcrafted leather sandals by Beek, chunky signet rings by James Colarusso, cashmere hoodies, hand-carved wood figurines, hand-stitched leather bags and belts, and more from lesser-known designers and artisans around the world. If you see its hand-poured own-brand candles, grab them; in scents that evoke 1970s-era Coppertone sun lotion and beach bonfires, they sell out quickly.

Gloria Jewel

136 Main Street, Amagansett

The Amagansett location is one of Gloria Jewel’s three Hamptons shops; a fourth is in Manhattan. The assortment of on-trend—but never overly trendy—womenswear includes flirty short dresses by LoveShackFancy and tailored office-to-dinner dresses by Leallo; oversize cashmere boatnecks from 360 Sweater and rainbow-embellished cashmere joggers by Wyse London; woven leather mules by the Odells and camo-pattern suede clutches by Kempton.

Innersleeve Records

Whether you are nostalgic for the days spent flipping through bins of LPs at your local record shop or are too young to have experienced those joys firsthand, you are sure to find music to your liking at Innersleeve Records. In addition to new and used vinyl records, the shop sells CDs and cassettes of music from au courant and golden-oldie bands, along with the equipment to play them on. Have a stack of eight-track tapes you found in your parents’ attic? Here you can buy a player so that you can listen to them, or you can trade them in for something else. Innersleeve also sells guitars, amps, strings, and other accessories along with music memorabilia. It hosts in-store performances and other events as well.

Kailani

“Kailani” means “seawater and sky” in Hawaiian, and its assortment of breezy beachwear and casual apparel for women evokes the laid-back ease of the Hawaiian Islands (or at least an Easterner’s vision of such). There is no shortage of floral and tie-dyed bikinis, and you can also find flowing maxi dresses, tunics, and palazzo pants to throw over them post-swim. Striped rompers, easy-fitting tank tops, and swingy short dresses are ideal for days when your most strenuous activity might be deciding between margaritas and daiquiris; you can find dresses and separates for slightly more formal evenings too.

Kelly B

Another womenswear boutique, Kelly B has a slightly more East Coast boho vibe. On any given visit you might find over-the-shoulder rompers and figure-flaunting gingham  dresses, straw clutches adorned with pompoms and platform open-toe mules, overalls with spaghetti straps and flouncy dresses in a petite leopard print—or you might not, as the inventory changes frequently. Fun fact: Proprietor Kelly Brown played Brad on the ‘90s Nickelodeon series “Hey Dude.”

Love Adorned

156 Main Street, Amagansett

Love Adorned

In addition to Amagansett, Love Adorned has shops in Manhattan and Santa Monica, CA. Image: Love Adorned

A visit to Love Adorned is an instant pick-me-up; there is so much to admire and covet. The shop is best known for its vintage and artisanal jewelry; the latter includes handcrafted rings by Brooklyn-based Blair Lauren Brown encrusted with gold nuggets, delicate gold bracelets with beads hand-dipped in melted resin by Gigi Clozeau, and statement-making sterling-silver hoop earrings made by Love Adorned founder Lori Leven. Other offerings include fanciful ink-jetted socks from Japanese studio Three Tides Tattoo, stoneware soap dishes by ceramic artist Kim Hau cleverly designed with a drainage spout to hang over the sink, handcrafted unisex fragrances by D.S. & Durga you are almost certain not to smell on anyone else, and chic shades by Barton Perreira.

Montauk Clothing Company

787 Montauk Highway, Montauk

Forgot to pack a hoodie to wear to the beach at night? Want a straw fedora to protect you from the sun in style? Cannot live without a “Shut Up & Fish” T-shirt? Montauk Clothing Company is where you will find all manner of short- and long-sleeve T-shirts, sweatshirts, caps, hats, and other casual wear for men, women, and children, including those “Montauk 1660 —The End” shirts that will make you the envy of your friends who could not get away from the city this year.

Nellie’s of Amagansett

230 Main Street, Amagansett

If your weekend is not complete without a spot of antiquing, head to Nellie’s. The unassuming clapboard exterior does not prepare you for the potpourri of vintage and antique delights inside: patchwork quilts and brass faucets, jadeite drinkware and amber necklaces, farmhouse tables and Lucite brooches…

Pink Chicken

14 Amagansett Square, Unit D, Amagansett

The Pink Chicken

Pink Chicken sells clothing for babies, kids, and women. Image: Pink Chicken

The Duchess of Cambridge—aka Prince William’s wife, Duchess Kate—tends to dress her little ones in clothing with a nostalgic bent: well-crafted classics that kids might have worn 50 years ago and may well be wearing 50 years from now. Pink Chicken is a source of children’s apparel with the same aesthetic given a subtle update. Dalmatians, ferns, and crabs adorn onesies; flouncy dresses girls will love twirling in boast dainty stitching and cartoon cakes; boys and girls alike can opt for shirts decorated with anchors or old-school station wagons. Moms—or any other women—can shop equally comfortable and timeless dresses, tops, and wide-legged pants, some of which are in the same prints as the kids’ clothing, so that you and your little one can match.

Tiina the Store

215 Main Street, Amagansett

Tiina the Store

Tiina the Store is located in a 19th-century building, but there is nothing old-fashioned about its carefully curated selection of impeccably crafted apparel, jewelry, and decor. Womenswear by Belgian designer Jan-Jan Van Essche and Italian designer Daniele Gregis share the same spare, almost architectural aesthetic as the menswear by French label Arpenteur and Italy’s Album di Famiglia—and of the white walls, metal mesh displays, and Roly Poly seating by Faye Toogood of the store itself. Other offerings include children’s clothing by Makie and Marimekko, Iittala glassware (including items from its classic Birds series), and hard-to-find fragrances by Perfumer H.

Vernacular Etc.

136 Main Street, Amagansett

Located down the street from Tiina the Store, Vernacular Etc. offers its own curation of home goods and jewelry, with a small selection of apparel as well. Many of its products are from emerging artisans or designed in-house. Slender square stacking rings share display space with silver hoop earrings punctuated by a single large pearl; effortlessly chic French raincoats complement whimsical ceramic tableware. Hand-picked vintage pieces and original artwork round out the eclectic assortment.
