You can’t discuss shopping in Dumbo without talking about the Brooklyn Flea. Every weekend from April through December it hosts dozens upon dozens of stalls in the Manhattan Bridge Archway selling everything from antique furniture to artisanal jewelry to vintage apparel. That’s hardly Dumbo’s only shopping option, however. In addition to a smattering of global brands including John Fluevog, Rodd & Gunn, Scotch & Soda, and West Elm, numerous one-of-a-kind shops have made the neighborhood their home.
The Powerhouse Arena
The headquarters of art-book publisher powerHouse Books, this sprawling space offers much more than books of all genres, including plenty of children’s titles. It’s also an art gallery, and it hosts book launches, readings, and other gatherings. Carmelo Anthony, Alan Cumming, Raven Leilani, and Rainbow Rowell are just a few of the authors and multi-hyphenates who have appeared here.
This Is Latin America
Every item sold by This Is Latin America was handcrafted in Central or South America using sustainable methods. The range of products may surprise those who know little of Latin America and will definitely delight just about everyone: handwoven wool coats from Argentina and Peruvian blankets knitted from hand-spun baby-alpaca wool, folkloric Mexican rugs and ceramic pottery from Nicaragua, silver jewelry from Chile and hand-painted ceramic trays from Colombia.
Two Kids and a Dog
While you won’t find products for canines in this shop, you will discover plenty for kids. Among the assortment: adorable metallic shoes for new walkers, Patagonia jackets for kids up to age 10, pajamas adorned with dinosaurs and giraffes, fun bike helmets they’ll be eager to wear, origami kits, fanciful jigsaw puzzles, glitter markers, and games like Kerplunk and Operation you’ll be eager to play with them.
Aegir Boardworks
Novice and experienced surfers and skaters alike flock to Aegir, which sells a cornucopia of skateboards, surfboards, and related accessories, from helmets to fins to hoodies. It also offers indoor and outdoor skate lessons and camps for kids ages four and up; it will even facilitate skate parties that will make you the coolest parent among your child’s peers. The staff repair surfboards, snowboards, and skis too, and they’re always happy to chat about all things board-related.
Brooklyn Space
At Brooklyn Space’s Dumbo showroom you can see and feel its furniture before ordering. Most of its sofas, chairs, sideboards, and cocktail tables have a Mid-Century Modern sensibility, though some also lean toward Art Deco glamour. And because it keeps best-selling styles in stock, you could receive your new furniture in as little as five days.
54 Hudson
54 Hudson offers a selection of thoughtful and well-crafted housewares, bath products, specialty foods, art, and books. Established by Christina Johnston in 2022, the store is located in its namesake townhouse. The house, originally built for ship makers in the early 1800s, is an ivy-covered brick townhouse in the heart of Vinegar Hill, Brooklyn. As well as a store, 54 Hudson is a home, garden, and studio. The store carries what we live with and love, a balance of everyday staples and high craft.
