The West Village has long been a haven for vintage-lovers. Even amid the influx of global brands—A.P.C., James Perse, Marine Layer, and Reiss, to name just a few—independent shops like The End of History, Left Bank Books, Screaming Mimis, and Tudor Rose Antiques still offer preloved decor, books, and apparel. Other independent stalwarts such as bookstore Three Lives & Co., C.O. Bigelow ( “the oldest apothecary in America”), and Casa Magazines, which sells some 2,500 titles from around the world, continue to make the West Village a neighborhood like no other. So do the unique boutiques below.
The Seven
With its antique furnishings and hand-painted bespoke wallpaper, The Seven is as eye-catching as the jewelry it carries. Many of the pieces, designed by artisans worldwide, are commissioned especially for the shop. Diamond-and-enamel necklaces from France’s Gigi Clozeau, candy-colored earrings from Italy’s Bea Bongiasca, and bold gold-and-black rings from Singapore’s State Property are among the boutique’s recent offerings. The Seven also sells a smattering of women’s apparel and home accessories, but you might find it difficult to steal yourself away from the dazzling jewelry.
Lahn and Lahn Living
This is actually two shops around the corner from each other. Lahn sells women’s clothing and accessories, Lahn Living sells home accents, and both specialize in products from brands that are led by women, promote sustainable practices, or both. At Lahn you can get mod with pink-and-brown leggings by Henrik Vibskov, go ladylike in shirred dresses from Person, or dress creatively for success in silk shirts from Soeur. The home goods are equally wide-ranging. Tie-dyed table linens from Atelier Saucier, figural blankets by Olivia Wendel worthy of being hung like tapestries, and sleek molded-glass lighting from In Common With are just a sampling of what was recently in store.
The Old Yew Plant Shop
Are you uncertain which plant is most likely to survive among your northern-facing windows? Have you been known to kill even cacti? The Old Yew Plant Shop has you covered. Not only does it sell both popular and uncommon houseplants, but its knowledgeable staff will help you choose the ones best for your lifestyle, from petite succulents to towering black olive trees. And its pots and planters will show off your greenery to its lushest potential.
Cueva
Tucked in the basement of a handsome brownstone, Cueva offers equally handsome menswear and footwear from well-known and up-and-coming brands alike. You won’t find suits, but you can shop for just about everything else, from double-breasted blazers by 4SDesigns made of the softest baby-alpaca wool to batik shorts by Engineered Garments to spotted pony-hair loafers by Vinny’s.
Zoomies
Whether you share your life with a pampered pup or a cool cat, you will find it impossible to leave Zoomies empty-handed. Toasty coats and dashing bandanas, literal pup tents made of felt and silicone bowls you won’t mind leaving out when guests come, hypo-allergenic grooming wipes and stylish poop-bag carriers… and oh, the toys and treats! What dog wouldn’t want a Lick Croix Barkling Water plush toy?
