Brooklyn Heights has its share of national chains: Kiehl’s, PetSmart, Sephora, Trader Joe’s, Urban Outfitters. But they are outnumbered by the one-of-a-kind boutiques, vintage shops, and specialty retailers that help Brooklyn Heights retain its unique friendly-neighborhood feel.
Collyer’s Mansion
Looking to bring some color and pattern into your life—or at least into your home? Then Collyer’s Mansion is the home goods store for you. From dazzling handcrafted quilts that put a 21st-century spin on the time-honored craft of block printing to whimsical tufted rugs that resemble cartoon animal hides, from slipper chairs upholstered in oversize floral prints to exclusive striped dishware, this shop will brighten every home.
Marissa Alperin Studio
In her rings, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, Marissa Alperin incorporates precious and semiprecious stones in a way that’s both fresh and timeless. She’ll also work with you to create custom pieces, and in the spirit of “something old, something new,” she will also repurpose heirlooms and other vintage pieces or stones into new designs.
Books Are Magic
Co-owned by best-selling novelist Emma Straub, this independent bookstore stocks chart-toppers as well as titles from smaller presses and lesser-known authors. The children’s section is especially robust, as is the shop’s calendar of readings and author talks. If you love books, you’ll love spending time in Books Are Magic.
Salter House
Salter House describes itself as a seller of “housewares and houseclothes.” That may sound dull, but this shop is anything but. Housewares range from embroidered linen place mats imported from Italy to porcelain enamel cookware in the prettiest pale blue hue to luxurious eco-friendly soaps and lotions. Its womenswear encompasses floaty silk-and-cotton dresses and corsets made of Liberty of London chintz, while its children’s clothing includes cloud-soft pima cotton onesies and sailor dresses. If “dreamy” is your aesthetic, Salter House is a must-visit.
Woolyn
If you knit, crochet, weave, felt, or spin, there’s a good chance you’ve already heard of Woolyn. And if you’d like to learn one of those crafts, Woolyn is a good place to start. In addition to selling needles, looms, kits, and a rainbow of yarns—including some exclusives—the shop offers classes for adults and kids.
