Blick Art Materials, JD Sports, MAC Cosmetics, Staples, and Whole Foods Market are among the national retailers with a presence in Harlem. However, it’s the independent businesses that make the Harlem shopping experience unique. The best of these shops tap into the neighborhood’s rich history while building upon it by incorporating new and notable influences.
Urban Garden Center
Whether your garden consists of a yard or a windowsill, Urban Garden Center has the plants, pots, and other accoutrements you need to keep it thriving. Don’t know a cactus from a calathea? The staff at this family-owned business, which claims to be the city’s largest garden center, will help you choose the best plants for your lifestyle and ensure you know how to care for them.
Malcolm Shabazz Harlem Market
If you’re looking for Kente cloth from Mali, earrings from Ghana, sculptures from Nigeria, or other authentic African goods, this indoor/outdoor market is a must-visit. Then again, it’s a must-visit even if you do not have any particular items in mind. The aroma of the foods and perfumes, the global music, the vibrant colors of the wares, and the energetic ambience make this marketplace an invigorating treat for the senses.
NiLu
Founded to support independent Black makers, NiLu offers a well-curated assortment of home goods, art, and gifts. Standouts include scented candles by Harlem Candle Co. inspired by cultural heroes such as Langston Hughes and Duke Ellington; bandannas suitable for framing from All Very Goods; and artisanal soaps and body oils from Flo + Theo.
Capsule
Billionaire Boys Club, Kenzo, Ksubi, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Scotch and Soda are among the brands sold at this purveyor of upscale streetwear. The assortment is predominately for men, though there is a small curation of womenswear—along with items such as the Swarovski crystal-studded BB Simon belts that defy gender roles.
Grandma’s Place
“Grandma Dawn,” a former teacher, opened this toy store in 1999. Be careful when entering with kids in tow: Once they see the huge array of books, games, crafts, kits, and more, they’ll never want to leave. The shop is a great source of dolls and books for little ones of all ethnicities.
