Harlem – Lifestyle

Nearly a century after the first Harlem Renaissance, the neighborhood is enjoying another surge in popularity. Some of that is due to the numerous revitalized brownstones, apartment buildings, and commercial complexes refreshing the Harlem landscape. And some comes down to the wealth of things to see and do in the neighborhood.

Harlem is of course synonymous with live music. For every world-renowned institution like the Apollo Theater there are numerous smaller venues like nightclub Room 623, café Silvana, and restaurant Amor Cubano serving up jazz, R&B, folk, and just about every other type of music out there. And don’t forget gospel brunch every Sunday at Ginny’s Supper Club! There’s even a museum dedicated to the art form the neighborhood’s best known for: the National Jazz Museum in Harlem.

Beyond music, Harlem hosts other museums. El Museo del Barrio is a trove of artworks spanning centuries of Latin American and Caribbean history and culture; Museum of the City of New York offers not only exhibits exploring the history of the five boroughs but also workshops, film screenings, and other events. At the Hamilton Grange National Memorial you can explore Alexander Hamilton’s one-time home, while the Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art & Storytelling will keep kids happily occupied with colorful exhibits and hands-on activities.

People are sometimes surprised by Harlem’s wealth of green spaces. The neighborhood is home to some 20 acres of parks, where you’ll find everything from dog runs to lush blooms. Public art abounds too, from the Harriet Tubman Memorial in a formerly neglected traffic island to the vibrant Graffiti Hall of Fame.

And exploring beyond the neighborhood is easy, thanks to the myriad subway lines and the Metro-North station at 125th Street. So whether you prefer picnicking in a park or grooving in a nightclub, the comforts of soul food in a friendly neighborhood eatery or discovering new cuisines and cultures near and far, Harlem just might be the neighborhood for you.
