Tribeca isn’t considered a shopping destination the way SoHo, the West Village, or Fifth Avenue is. And the locals are fine with that—it means they can shop the neighborhood’s unique stores without battling crowds. Of course, a number of national retailers have stores in Tribeca as well, including Barnes & Noble, Target, and Whole Foods. But it’s the one-of-a-kind shops, including those listed below, that contribute to Tribeca’s distinctive ambience.
180 the Store
Thoughtful without being overly serious, artful without being pretentious, fashion-forward yet relaxed: That describes not only Tribeca but also this spacious store’s ever-changing curation of clothing, jewelry, accessories, and home goods. Hand-stitched womenswear from Album di Famiglia, recycled-cotton men’s T-shirts from Sunray Sportswear, sumptuous leather bags from Isaac Reina, and minimalist furnishings from Frama are just a few of the global goods you’ll find here.
Baboo
This quirky home furnishings purveyor moved from San Francisco to Tribeca in autumn 2023 (though it maintains a to-the-trade showroom in its former hometown). What do we mean by “quirky”? Merino wool rugs decorated with felt “rocks”; indoor swings with hand-knit ropes adorned with tassels, crocheted mushrooms, and other fanciful elements; multimedia footstools resembling chickens; wall mirrors resembling popsicles. These furnishings emphasize the fun in functional.
Fountain Pen Hospital
Since 1946, this shop has sold and repaired fine writing implements. In addition to new, limited-edition, and vintage fountain and ballpoint pens, it offers exceptional notebooks, inks, pencils, and desk accessories. When you enter, you might not know a Montblanc from a Monteverde, but you’re certain to appreciate both types of pens after speaking with one of Fountain Pen Hospital’s erudite staff.
Philip Williams Posters
Also known as the Poster Museum, this gallery sells, well, posters—but probably not the sort you hung on your dorm wall. Here, you’ll find movie posters from Poland that bear little resemblance to the Stateside versions, 19th-century tobacco and spirits advertisements, Art Nouveau and Art Deco extravaganzas, propaganda posters from around the world, and just about every other type of frame-worthy print targeting just about every hobby and interest. And yes, the shop will custom-frame posters, too.
Boomerang Toys
Tribeca is a very family-friendly neighborhood, as evidenced by its numerous stores selling children’s clothing, shoes, and gifts. For more than two decades Boomerang Toys has been one of them. Among the puzzles and puppets, dinosaurs and dreamcatcher kits, books and board games, you’re certain to find something for even the most impossible-to-shop-for kid.
