There’s no such thing as a typical day on the Upper West Side. Stretching from 59th to 110th Streets west of Central Park, the neighborhood is a trove of spectacular sights (and sites).
Lincoln Center is most likely the Upper West Side’s best-known attraction. The instantly recognizable campus is home not only to the Juilliard School, the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Ballet, and other arts organizations but also to outdoor sculptures, lush lawns, and the iconic Revson Fountain.
Nearly as renowned is the American Museum of Natural History. Though the museum opened in 1877, it hasn’t rested on its considerable laurels; in 2023 it debuted the Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education and Innovation, which includes an insectarium and a butterfly vivarium. The museum, including its Hayden Planetarium, is just one element that makes the Upper West Side so family-friendly. Others include the Children’s Museum of Manhattan, the DiMenna Children’s History Museum within the New-York Historical Society Museum, the myriad programs of the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan, numerous playgrounds, and of course, the two parks that flank the neighborhood: Central Park on the east and Riverside Park on the west.
Photo ops abound throughout the UWS beyond the parks, the museums, and Lincoln Center. Majestic Columbus Circle serves as the southern entrance to the neighborhood. Overlooking it, the gleaming Shops at Columbus Circle mall is nearly as commanding. The Arconia, the Dakota, and the Belnord (whose exteriors double for the primary setting of “Only Murders in the Building”) are a few of the neighborhood’s eye-catching Gilded Age structures. Held every Sunday, the Grand Bazaar flea market is chock-a-block with antiques, crafts, and a lively crowd. And don’t forget the UWS institution and epicurean emporium that is Zabar’s—and for that matter, the Banksy “Hammer Boy” graffito just down the street. From lox to street art: The Upper West Side has it all.
